In Pastor Hoots’ message titled “The Sin of Neglect,” he began with the following statement: “It is very difficult to convince someone they are a sluggard, slothful and idle.”
Neglect is a quiet but dangerous sin. James 4:17 (KJV) warns us: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” Neglect often does not come through open rebellion but through small failures to act on what we already know to do.
The good news is that when we do sin, we have hope. “…If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1 KJV). Still, we must guard our hearts against neglect in the areas that matter most.
Guard Your Relationship with the Lord
Proverbs 4:23 (KJV): “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
The most important place where neglect can creep in is your walk with God. Pastor Hoots reminded us, “He is waiting to hear your voice.” Daily prayer, time in the Word, and honest fellowship with the Lord are not optional—they are vital.
We must start each day with the Lord, pouring out our hearts before Him. Neglecting prayer leaves us weak, distracted, and vulnerable for the adversary to create a stronghold.
Guard Your Relationship with Your Family
Proverbs 27:23 (KJV): “Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.”
This wisdom applies directly to our homes. Husbands cannot neglect their wives. Wives cannot neglect their husbands. Parents must not neglect their children.
Family requires intentional effort. Life is always changing, and if we do not actively guard our homes and our hearts, the pressures of the world can create distance. Pastor Hoots reminded us: “You will have to work at it. You will have to work at our heart.”
To neglect your family is to allow weakness to grow inside the very place God designed for strength and nurture.
Neglect is Sin
Neglect may look small, but it carries eternal weight. To ignore prayer, to let your family drift, to put off obedience—this is sin. But there is hope: Christ is our Advocate. When we fail, He calls us back, forgives us, and gives us grace to keep going.
Don’t allow neglect to define your spiritual life. Guard your heart. Guard your family. Stay faithful in your place.
