What Defines a Healthy Church?
A healthy church does not measure success by attendance, programs, or activity. A church measures its health by spiritual conditions. In the book of 1 Corinthians, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16), the Apostle Paul addressed a troubled church, yet he still loved them deeply and faithfully spoke truth into their situation.
In 1 Corinthians 16:24 (KJV), Paul writes:
“My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
Despite their divisions, immaturity, and struggles, Paul remained committed to helping them grow in the Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor Roger Hoots pointed out a powerful truth: Paul served both as a spiritual specialist and a general practitioner. He diagnosed specific problems, but he also addressed the overall health of the church.
At some point in our lives, we visit the doctor for a checkup. Sometimes we may not like the diagnosis, but if we will receive the truth, it will help us.
The issues Paul addressed in Corinth reveal clear marks of a healthy church, which sets a standard we can use to examine our own assembly.
1. Unity in the Church
Agreeing on What Matters Most
In 1 Corinthians 1:10 (KJV), Paul writes:
“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined in the same mind and in the same judgment.”
The Holy Spirit calls for unity among believers. Division weakens a church and disrupts its testimony. Paul did not ignore disagreement. He confronted it and called the church to come together in truth.
Unity does not mean compromise. It means agreement on the Word of God.
A healthy church:
- Stands together on doctrine
- Speaks the same truth
- Refuses to allow division to take root
2. Maturity Among Believers
Growing Beyond Spiritual Infancy
In 1 Corinthians 3:1 (KJV), Paul writes:
“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.”
Every believer begins as a babe in Christ, but growth must follow. Scripture describes different levels of spiritual maturity: babes, young men, and fathers.
Pastor Hoots reminded us of a convicting truth often quoted by Bro. Ed Thierbach at Ranchero Drive Baptist Church:
“You are young once, but you can be immature for a lifetime.”
A healthy church encourages growth:
- Believers move forward in their walk
- They learn and apply Scripture
- They take responsibility for their spiritual life
3. Purity in Daily Living
No Excuses for Sin
In 1 Corinthians 5:1 (KJV), Paul confronted serious sin within the church. He did not ignore it nor excuse it.
Every believer wrestles with sin, but we must never choose to live in it.
A healthy church:
- Takes sin seriously
- Refuses to justify wrongdoing
- Encourages repentance and holiness
God calls His people to live clean lives that reflect Him.
4. Clarity in Doctrine and Structure
Knowing God’s Design for the Church
In 1 Corinthians 7:1–3 (KJV) and other various scriptures, Paul brings clarity to important areas of life and doctrine.
A healthy church maintains clarity in:
- Its mission in today’s world
- The designed structure of marriage
- The roles of men and women in the church
- Biblical church leadership
God is not the author of confusion. He expects order, structure, and obedience to His Devine Design.
Pastor Hoots emphasized that God calls men to lead, and the church must remain clear and settled on these truths.
5. Charity Among Believers
The Essential Ingredient
In 1 Corinthians 13:1 (KJV), Paul writes:
“Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass…”
Charity, true Christ-like love, is not optional. It is essential.
Without charity:
- Unity breaks down
- Service becomes empty
- The church loses its effectiveness
A healthy church actively practices charity in how members speak, serve, and treat one another.
6. Memory of the Gospel
Never Forget What Christ Has Done
In 1 Corinthians 15:2 (KJV), Paul reminds the church:
“By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you…”
A healthy church remembers:
- The preaching of God’s Word
- The moment of Salvation
- The blood Jesus Christ shed for us
When a church forgets these things, it loses sight of its foundation.
But when it remembers, it stays grounded, grateful, and focused.
Examining Our Own Church
The church at Corinth had problems, but God used those problems to teach powerful truths.
These six marks give us a clear way to evaluate spiritual health:
- Unity
- Maturity
- Purity
- Clarity
- Charity
- Memory
Each one matters. Each one reveals the condition of a church.
